Coffee Roasters in Dubai and beyond

When I first came to Dubai back in 2009 you could count the number of coffee roasters on one hand and everyone who loved coffee, knew who the roasters were. Since then the Specialty Coffee scene has exploded and with it has come a raft of new coffee roasters many of whom are of a smaller, boutique type. The roasters are split into three main categories, defined by me, so bear with me : Specialty Coffee Cafe with an on site roastery : A perfect place for coffee lovers to hang out. The Coffee shop will be well thought out, there will be a buzz around the coffee and generally theres’s some food on offer too. Watch the roasters at work, chat to the roaster and the baristas and get a really great experience and as an added bonus take away some locally on site roasted coffee too. Generally these types of Cafes are located in more mainstream locations, and …

Specialty Coffee | Stomping Grounds

I’ve been watching and waiting for this new Speciality Coffee Shop and Roastery to open for a while now and today I got to visit for a first brew.  Stomping Grounds had literally been open for one day on my visit, and on first inspection it looked great and I am sure it’s going to be a great addition to the Specialty Coffee scene here in Dubai.  On our first trip we tried flat white and cold brew, with my companion vowing that this was the ‘best coffee he had ever tasted’ which is a fantastic accolade, though to be fair he’s a bit of a specialty coffee novice, but a good convert. Here are a few images from my initial visit as well as a short video which I hope will ‘whet your appetite’ so to speak, to try out this new spot which I’m sure will be a big hit for Specialty coffee lovers. As well as serving …

Love at First Bite and why it takes two days to make a decent Mille Feuille

It was love at first bite ! At the tender age of eighteen with my first ever full wage packet clasped in my hands I remember visiting Carwardines Coffee House in Corn Street, Bristol which was just around the corner from my new office. My mission was to buy myself a treat to celebrate my first ever full time job. Treat in hand, a cup of fine roasted coffee and a  plate bearing a posh french dessert I retreated to a window seat and started to enjoy my treat. The dessert on my plate, was a cream slice, as I knew it then, and I remember every mouthful with a pleasurable sigh even to this day. Later, I came to find out that there was much more to this treat than I had imagined and the humble cream slice as I knew it (also known as a vanilla slice or a custard slice) is also more famously known as the …

Afternoon Tea at The Palace Downtown Dubai

This is one of those posts, where I hope to tempt you visually into an afternoon tea with a difference.  For a few days each week (Saturday and Wednesday), the tiered platters that we often associate with afternoon tea are stored away, and instead a lavish help yourself afternoon tea spread is set out to be enjoyed in Al Bayt at The Palace, Downtown Dubai. Start off by selecting your seat in the lounge, a view of the Burj perhaps on the terrace, or indoors with some a/c and the same view and some dappled sunlight, or perhaps a little further back, where you can have some privacy and seclusion when the curtains are pulled across, giving the illusion of having your own private

Food Memories | The best ever Coffee & Walnut Cake Ever

Did the headline grab your attention – Here’s a recipe for Coffee & Walnut Cake which takes me back to my childhood. OK I should have added, in my humble opinion at the end LOL.  Here’s a tribute to my mum on Mother’s Day.  Though she’s in the UK and not in Dubai often, I talk to her often sometimes in person, more often by Whats App where she writes essays and seems to not know there’s a return button, I catch up with her shenagans on Facebook and remember her dearly through our shared love of food. So here goes. Does food trigger a memory for you?  It most certainly does for me, and here I share one of my childhood memories, a cake with a bitter sweet story. Arriving home from school aged eleven or twelve years old, I vividly remember the house smelling of baking – not just any baking, but the sweet smell of baked coffee …
