I recently got an invite in my mail box to go visit a newly opened fastfood restaurant called Tantuni and to sample some authentic southern turkish street food. I’m a big fan of Turkish food and was intrigued to hear about this new venture which was started by two passionate foodie friends who wanted to be able to eat one of their favourite foods here in Dubai.
The restaurant concept is traditional Southern Turkey street food cuisine called “Tantuni”. Tantuni is very thinly diced beef cooked in a large special pans with Turkish spices and then served in wrap rolls called “lavash” or in sandwich breads. There is also a Chicken version of Tantuni which was added to the menu for a regional variation.
I started my meal with a Beef Tantuni which was deliciously moist and succulent, the beef was cooked quickly in a mix of sumac, chilli and paprika and served in a fluffy wrap and tasted great. As a side I ordered a spicy Ezme Salad which comprised spicy tomato paste with an onion salad and a pomegranate sauce. It was really refreshing yet spicy at the same time. This was all washed down with a glass of Turkish Ayran – yogurt mixed with water and salt. Feeling fairly full I was persuaded to try a turkish classic dessert called Sekerpare which consisted of baked dough coated with nuts and suger syrup – it was rich and indulgent and a great end of my lunch. At 28AED for a Combo of 1 Tantuni Roll, Salad and a cold drink this is great value. The Sekerpare was an additional 15 AED
The chefs have been recruited specially from Southern Turkey and many of the dinners when I visited were from the Turkish Community and gave a hearty thumbs up to the authenticity of the food. Located in Jumeirah Lake Towers in Cluster D under Lake Terrace Tower the location is convenient and coincidentally close to my hairdressers so I guess it’s going to be a regular monthly indulgence 🙂
